WHY THIS PROJECT? WHY NOW?

I wrote Paloma out of fear and frustration. I've become entirely sick of seeing not only a lack of representation in film and television of female friendships, but the only representation available is often entirely unrealistic. There always seems to be a distinct separation - stories about love And stories about friendship. often, however, with women, the two are fiercely intertwined in a way that is never spoken about. I wanted the  relationship between Paloma and Celeste to be at the forefront of this story, and for the core of the script to be about the painful loss of losing a friend. At the same time, I wrote the film out of fear. Fear of society’s ever growing and sadistic need to pit women against each other for the sake of entertainment. Fear about what the true meaning of success means under capitalism.  my own fear about finding success in this industry.

PRODUCER'S STATEMENT

To start, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to consider my project. so much of the inspiration for this film, from movies like The Truman Show to Network, to even more recent satires and dystopian stories like Black Mirror and Ingrid Goes West have informed so much of  the creation of this. However, while i took a lot of inspiration, we also wanted to create something completely of it's own. I'm not focusing on the satire, the dystopia, the darkness -- while the backdrop is in fact an engineered island,  the core of this story is of two best friends who lose each other. Female friendship is an incredibly complex, multi-faceted, and intimate layer in the large scale and realm of human relationships. I'm creating this film because the female friendships in my life have entirely and wholly shaped who I am -- as a writer, creator, and person. At the same time, there's not nearly enough representation in today's media of the intimacy of platonic female relationships. Losing a best friend is a deep and painful heartbreak, just as you'd see in any love story.  We want to bring that to the world. Paloma is friendship through the lens of fame, and I hope you enjoy the journey thus far as much as we have.
